My Hair
How many times have you been told you’re going to lose your hair? It’s coming out. Nothing is going to stop it and a very official person in a white coat has told you this and even gave you a time frame? I have been told this twice.
First time was June 2009 when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and I was beginning chemo. It was going to fall out within two weeks and it will happen fast - within 24 hours. At that time, I shaved my head during a thunderstorm at 4:00 in the morning.
This time out of shear rebellion I cut it myself. I’ve always wanted to try cutting my own hair. Just to see if I could do it. How hard could it possibly be? I stood with a black cape around my neck, hair dripping down my sides and my hands working like Edward Scisscorhands.
I was going mod. Something edgy. Fresh. Off-centered (not Flock of Seagulls), but maybe something someone would want to emulate. A look only a woman about to lose her hair would dare sport. This is what I ended up with:
That’s right. A dutch boy haircut. Nothing edgy. No off-set bangs. Nothing crazy and fun and wild. A plain dutch boy haircut. Even my own daughter looks disgusted by it.
I don’t have the chops (pun intended) to cut my own hair. If you need an edgy, mod, fresh hair cut, do not call me. I am not your girl. But I tried it. Attempted it. Failed it. And it doesn’t matter because it’s going to fall out soon anyway.
Now when I hear Brooklyn pray at night “Dear God, please don’t let mama’s beautiful hair fall out because it’s so pretty”. I can’t help but wonder if God is cracking up and figuring out a way to let Brooklyn know He’s doing me a favor by letting it go.

Lindy.. you are too funny! When I saw a pic of you the other day and it was that short I thought it was cute… never knowing you did it yourself! I tried to cut Austin’s once and it was a nightmare.. big patches everywhere… so maybe next time I’ll send him to you:)

I don’t know how one can laugh considering the circumstances, but I am cracking up right now! Thanks for making my afternoon Lindy. You are one funny, and talented lady. I have never dared to cut my own hair since my Mom use to treaten me if I ever cut my own hair (my sister was a hair stylist). BTW - it looks really cute. I’ve had worse hair cuts with paying for a cut (not my sister).

If it makes you feel any better, I flip my head of thin, yucky, fine, blonde hair over all the time and just hack at it with the kitchen shears until all the dead ends are off. Then I wear it in a ponytail 364 days a year. My hairdresser hates me. And my unskillfully cut hair. At least yours is cute–even if it won’t be there long.
You make me smile. And I hope you had a good time up North. We were up there too (in our own cottage) and it was beautiful with BEAUTIFUL sunsets! God is good!!

Ah Lindy - I must say for the first time of cutting your own hair, you did a great job! Short does fit you - you look beautiful! The first I cut my own hair I was 5 I think. And my bangs were so short that I really didn’t even have any - maybe a 1/2″ long. And then they were crooked, so my mom had to cut them shorter to even them out. Mortifying! Anyway - you still are beautiful!!!

I think you look great! I could never do a haircut like you did! Keep up the desire to feel edgy….it shows you have spunk. And spunk is what you need to kick this thing!
And, btw, I tried to sign up for some times to drive you to your radiation appts. but the month of August was FULL! You have lots of great friends. If you get into a bind, though, and just need a quick ice cream fix or something, let me know! I just live in Holland.
